This thought goes through my mind every time I'm working on a drawing or painting. It's inevitable. I just push the negative thought out of my mind and I see if I can fix it. Or live with it. As an artist I've always been interested in experimenting with style and technique. I do tend to stick to the very basics that I've learned over the years but I'm always looking to try and bend or break those rules to create an interesting piece. This new piece was a bit of a challenge. I was extremely happy with how the initial watercolor painting turned out in terms of capturing the subject as well as my brush strokes and use of color. To me, it is proof that the new techniques and study of color theory are helping me advance as an artist. So my first notion was to call it finished. However, the painting felt unfinished the more I looked at it. It was nagging at me. So, I wanted to see if I could push the painting further and create something NEW with it. I've probably done thousands of figure drawings and paintings over the years. I have maybe 30 or 40 plaid drawings and paintings from the last 12 years or so. I wanted to see if mixing in some of my color field/ plaid ideas could create a new and interesting composition. So I just said to myself, "so what if I wreck it?" I tried something new and hopefully will learn from it. Without hesitation I drew some light lines over the painting to create a general grid and started playing with acrylic paint, brushes, a pallet knife and some tape. So I might have ruined it. To some out there I probably did and that's just fine with me. I'm still happy enough with the work to share it and the experience with
the world.<br />

Here it is, with the few photos I took from start to finish-<br />

This time around I will discuss my most recent portrait painting and some background on my influences and where I've developed some of my techniques.</span></span> <br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So first I'll go over my influences. I have a great many artistic influences but when it comes to watercolor there only a select few I've followed over the years. Charles Reid is one, especially for his use of color and his brush control</span>. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've tried to emulate his loose and expressive style but honestly, that is still a work in progress. Another great influence in terms of color theory is the great Jim Ames. I've posted info about his book on color theory in the past and I still highly recommend everyone checks it out</span> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">for tips on how to build beautiful values. David Mack is another artist whose work I've appreciated over the years, especially his mix of realism and abstract. There are a great many other artists that I've picked up books and tips from over years and I've borrowed from all of them in one way or another to create my own style.... which i prefer to think as a loose technique with hints of photo realism. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The painting in this post was a recent commission for a baby portrait. When I'm working on portraits I prefer to use photo reference to help capture the essence of my model. Here is the original photo-</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BjVNoKgsYmY/U6ujgVeKs7I/AAAAAAAAA2A/lER0wHhuql0/s1600/1970519_10203459509756544_1381421128_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BjVNoKgsYmY/U6ujgVeKs7I/AAAAAAAAA2A/lER0wHhuql0/s1600/1970519_10203459509756544_1381421128_n.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> She's a darling, right? After playing around with some sketches I cropped out the areas I felt unnecessary and focused on her wonderful eyes and smile. basically this area-</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-srqu2y4SqK8/U6uk5F6lIBI/AAAAAAAAA2M/q0q_GKPXF-Q/s1600/Copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-srqu2y4SqK8/U6uk5F6lIBI/AAAAAAAAA2M/q0q_GKPXF-Q/s1600/Copy.jpg" height="320" width="242" /></a></div>
I want the focal point of the painting to be her eyes, nose and mouth so that will have the most detail. I loved the contrast of red/pink and green so I wanted to build a loose wash surrounding her in the back ground and really focus on building on the shapes and forms for her face. So I started by using a 2h pencil and mapped out the drawing on 140lb cold press paper. I prefer Arches for my watercolor paper but Fabriano is very good as well. For best results don't go below 140 lb. The paper fiber will either fail or warp terribly. <br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The drawing process is always the longest portion of portrait painting for me because I want to get it right, there's no point in doing a portrait if I can't capture the subject... Plus. I'm just an insanely slow drawer... draftsman? Whatever the correct term, I'm slow. I use several methods usually free hand for expressive purposes but for this one i used a loose grid system to capture as an exact of a likeness as I could. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I then built my palette. I only used 3 brushes on this one, all Winsor & Newton brand, a #10 round for the majority of the painting, a flat, mostly for clean edges, and a #4 round for fine detail. Here are the colors </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I used as well </span>(all Winsor & Newton paints and a John Pike palette, they are the best)-</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TaJHcHjvQX0/U6un1vk9x7I/AAAAAAAAA2g/a2uiqgZvBHo/s1600/IMG_3088.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TaJHcHjvQX0/U6un1vk9x7I/AAAAAAAAA2g/a2uiqgZvBHo/s1600/IMG_3088.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">cad yellow light, yellow ochre, raw umber, permanent rose, cad red, hookers green, permanent magenta, sepia, cerulean blue, indigo</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I start by blocking in basic shadows and shape of the face, very lightly because I may need to keep adding and changing color during the process. Her her skin tone it was a mix of the yellow ochre, raw umber, perm rose and cad red with hints of the hookers green.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oAPusAcLSng/U6upwVckqYI/AAAAAAAAA2s/Z5yheDTcPxE/s1600/IMG_3065.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oAPusAcLSng/U6upwVckqYI/AAAAAAAAA2s/Z5yheDTcPxE/s1600/IMG_3065.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
I continue to build the form and features of the face working on the edges and building on the shadows cast. I kept building the green for the areas flowing away from the viewer and building the warm reds and magenta for the areas that i really wanted to emphasize in the foreground, particularly the cheeks and nose while still keeping some paper white for the extreme highlights on her nose and cheeks. (I really like the look of rosy cheeks and noses)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RviLy0OhwXA/U6uqzjE6jGI/AAAAAAAAA20/r0oChG1ON1k/s1600/IMG_3070.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RviLy0OhwXA/U6uqzjE6jGI/AAAAAAAAA20/r0oChG1ON1k/s1600/IMG_3070.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After this point I started to work very quickly.<br />
<br />
Soooo, I unfortunately forgot to take some photos of the next steps. I built the background washes and then worked on blocking in and creating the loose details for the flower band in her hair. The band was extremely detailed but I just roughed in the shapes to show some texture and some of the finer details of the flower itself. However, I did not want the flower to be the focal point, so i used some restraint and left it fairly loose in detail. After finishing the flower I then focused on the shape of the hair, I used a warm dark value, a mix of sepia, cad red and small amount of indigo for the darkest shadows. From there I used the small round to build all the details into the painting. The last area I worked on was the shirt, which was just building the shapes of the folds by emphasizing the different values of color in the shadows.<br />
<br />
After all that, here is the final product-<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I hope this helps for any one starting out and hopefully here soon i will get a tripod and actually starting filming this so I wont miss any steps.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Until next time,</span><br />

It's been awhile since I've been on here. If you've been keeping up with me on my Instagram, Facebook or Tumblr accounts you're probably up to date with what I've been working on. If not, I'm drawing and painting a bunch of color field or what I like to call "Plaid" paintings once again. I've been playing with these ideas for over ten years and I got inspired to start building on those ideas once again recently. Here is a break down of the process I'm tinkering with at the moment to create these images. This is my most recent painting which I've yet to title. It has my Spacegirl Molly character undressing for a shower (the next painting I'm working on) after a day out adventuring in space. This series is going to mix more traditional figure studies painted realistically with the minimalist color fields creating breaks or what I like to call "windows" of focus in composition in hopes to help create an interesting experience for the viewer.<br />
<br />
This isn't every step I took during the course of the painting but this gives you a good idea of how I got the end result. <br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yesterday I attended the 3rd Annual Kids Need to Read Day : The Halloween Comicfest at Heroes Comics and Gaming. I’ve worked these shows for the Kids Need to Read charity in the past and once again I had a great time talking shop with my fellow artists and sketching for all those that donated to this worthy cause. I want to thank everyone that came down and purchased a sketch and checked out my original art, I truly appreciate the kind words and the support. I’m sorry to those of you I had to turn down for sketches, the list just escalated quickly and I got behind as usual… Please contact me if there is anything you are interested in me drawing for you in the future. </span></div>

This time around I chose to show another Wolverine painting that I recently finished. My process is a mis- mash of styles I've learned over the years that I have become comfortable with and quite a bit of experimentation with varying results. By no means is this the end all be all of watercolor painting and I'm sure some purists out there would find some things wrong with how I do it but thats fine by me. When painting I'm more interested in where each experience takes me with the piece in general not on making someone else happy. Some times it's a great experience and I love the outcome... other times not so much. This one I was quite happy with. This is almost a complete step by step. Some of the photos when I was working quickly on details or wet into wet areas didn't turn out because I was more focused on making sure that the paint was doing what I wanted it to do. Sorry about the picture quality. Sub par lighting and quick shots with iphone is as good as I could do this time around.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So here. We. Go-</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So a lot of my drawings start out as doodle on a notepad while I'm at work. If I like what is forming I'll bring out the sketch pad and start to flesh it out and maybe even complete it. S that is the story behind this drawing of Wolverine. I actually finished up the original sketch right before Phoenix Comicon so you may of already seen it. The second Wolvie movie is coming out soon so thats why I had the idea of capturing the moment right after he realizes he just went beserker rage on some ninjas.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This 1st image has the original sketch paper drawing and then the light boxed copy on to a sheet of Arches 10 in x 14 in 140 lb hot press water color paper. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a smooth water color paper and I like to use it because the water effects that can happen by the lack of texture in comparison to normal water color paper. More on that later. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Light box is a term I use whenever I copy an original drawing on to a different drawing surface (or maybe a nice way of saying I occasionally trace my own stuff). I use this in several different techniques and for multiple types of art mediums because I find it a more efficient way to transfer an image than trying to completely re draw the original idea. </span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Transfered image taped on my painting board</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bOqHyJfSw6U/UcTUZBiZfFI/AAAAAAAAAxM/y-wE2fhvltY/s1600/IMG_0993.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bOqHyJfSw6U/UcTUZBiZfFI/AAAAAAAAAxM/y-wE2fhvltY/s320/IMG_0993.jpg" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Original on the left, transferred version on the right</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So the next step I take with hot press paper is to prepare it. The paper is only a 140 lb weight so it is still fairly light weight in terms of water color paper. To cut down on the paper warping I give the paper a quick submersion bath in some water. I use this old cookie sheet because it fits the paper sizes I normally use perfectly. I also keep some paper towel right next to it absorb the access water after the bath.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59ZSW2Vzack/UcTUY4-1fXI/AAAAAAAAAxE/pbhI0G2Rv5I/s1600/IMG_1022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59ZSW2Vzack/UcTUY4-1fXI/AAAAAAAAAxE/pbhI0G2Rv5I/s320/IMG_1022.jpg" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Use whatever you fit your paper into and just add enough water to dip the paper in and out.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u2htuKSdA0o/UcTUgmjbuGI/AAAAAAAAAxU/vWzAoCB55g8/s1600/IMG_1025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u2htuKSdA0o/UcTUgmjbuGI/AAAAAAAAAxU/vWzAoCB55g8/s320/IMG_1025.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Submerged Wolverine. I kept him under for about 15 seconds.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Use this technique to help properly prepare your paper for all the water you are going to use for the painting itself. Since I've started doing this I very rarely have to deal with a warped final product any more. Just be careful not to submerge the paper too long because it will start to break down the fibers and ruin your paper and picture in the process.<br />
So after the bath dry all the extra water off of the paper. I keep the back a little damp to help the paper stick to the painting surface. I highly recommend to then tape the paper to your board or desk like the 1st image above to help it stick even more and stop any initial warping of the paper. I always know the paper is going to warp, it's natural. But this process will help out in the end, you'll see the proof in these photos.<br />
<br />
<br />
I then prepare my paints. I build my palette up with all the initial colors that I intend use and then build from there as the painting progresses. This is my basic set up as well- A big drawing(painting) board, Darth Vader cup for brushes and tools, Spray bottle with water, two water containers- one for dirty brush and one for clean water, paper towel for any quick color bleed fixes and my palettes. I used to have a super awesome nice one but I must have lost it over all my moves over the years and I have not found a suitable replacement yet. I use the kitchen table and the board over a traditional drafting table because I like the freedom of working flat or at an angle at a seconds notice.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CEe93GJTzyc/UcTlnfLMGNI/AAAAAAAAAyg/ImN2BlR2DY4/s1600/IMG_1026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CEe93GJTzyc/UcTlnfLMGNI/AAAAAAAAAyg/ImN2BlR2DY4/s320/IMG_1026.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">tools of the trade</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
So next I start with the my sky. This painting is all about trying to capture an intense emotional experience in a cold, emotionless setting. I wanted to create a cool mountain haze effect with the atmosphere. So drenched the paper with water from the spray bottle and then started to mop brush color in lightly. I don't use any masking fluids because I've never had good luck with them in the past. They can definitely keep your pure paper whites and protect areas you don't want color bleed but when I've tried them in the past I ruined a few of paintings because they tore some of the paper fibers on removal. I've found if I work fast enough I don't need them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rfG1sb-_1no/UcTUofkU7oI/AAAAAAAAAxk/rCC6wk5u_2E/s1600/IMG_1027.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rfG1sb-_1no/UcTUofkU7oI/AAAAAAAAAxk/rCC6wk5u_2E/s320/IMG_1027.jpg" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is about 2 layers of color . I always work light to dark because you really cant go back in water color once dark or really saturated paint is applied. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You may see the paper has warped because of all the water added. I just work through it because I know it will be fine. I tend to work my background in completely before moving on to my figures. I use the bluish/green/ grey for some atmospheric prospective and then slowly add the warmer tones in to bring your eyes to foreground. <br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All the basics are completed, now add the details</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You may notice the effects of the wet on wet technique on this smooth paper. You can see the paint drips that slowly went down the paper, you can seen interesting pigment textures forming in the mountains. You can do all of this on cold press paper as well but many time the effects look different because of all texture in that paper in comparison to a lack there of in the smooth paper. It also tends to make you work quicker because you have less control over what the paint is going to do, which makes it an interesting experience to say the least.<br />
<br />
Next I block in the basic colors for Wolverine and the ninjas. I then start to flesh out the details as well. Wolverine in one of his costumes and the ninjas are fleshed out in a black made by mixing purple and green together. I intentionally went full blown cad yellow on wolverine to contrast the coolness of the background atmosphere by bringing him to the fore front of the picture. I wanted to bring attention to him and his facial expression which is mixture of anger, fear and regret<br />
(at least, thats what I was going for). You'll also notice that in the time elapsed that the paper has now flattened out completely<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ScFVFlALUE4/UcTU0vmO1jI/AAAAAAAAAx8/nc_OqYBfFro/s1600/IMG_1032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ScFVFlALUE4/UcTU0vmO1jI/AAAAAAAAAx8/nc_OqYBfFro/s320/IMG_1032.jpg" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I tend to work top down so I finish the backgrounds and start fleshing out the details for the characters.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As I work in the details I added some darker areas in the mountains for some added depth and detail of the scenery. I then work quickly to add all the details into Wolverine and the ninjas. Sorry, I tend to get into the moment and work quickly on details so that is why there is a lack of pictures. I purposefully did not make this image gory, which is a direction I definitely could of gone but I wasn't interested in portraying that at all in this image. As with most of my big paintings, I want to capture the atmosphere and the emotion more than anything and I think this one was fairly successful in doing so.<br />

So I just realized I didn't post anything at all in the month of May. Oh well, it is pretty obvious I am not the most dutiful blogger and in my defense, I did stay pretty busy the whole month. The big two events of my year have now come and gone, Free Comic Book Day and Phoenix Comicon, and I am happy to say they both went pretty well. I learned a lot from the experience of being on my own this year instead of being a guest at a booth and hopefully I'll be able to use that knowledge to be better prepared for cons in the years to come. I may have some other events later on in the year that I will be attending but as of now I will be attending San Diego but only in "professional" status, not as an exhibitor. <br />
<br />
So until then I will working on a few new paintings that I want to get done and working on Spacegirl Molly's story. I will have a post on my new work in the next 2 weeks. I promise.<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyways, here is the art that I've worked over the past month -<br />

<br />
So as the title says, Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday May 4th. I will be manning a table at Jesse James Comics from early morning until about 1 pm (maybe later depending on sketch demand). Here is the nice flyer Jesse made for me the other day-<br />
<br />
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/34693_10151347893057191_1835124314_n.jpg">34693_10151347893057191_1835124314_n.jpg</a><br />
<br />
I love events at Jesse's, they are always lively and full of good people. Jesse has taken care of me over the years so come on down and support his store! <br />
<br />
I will have several new prints for purchase for $10 and a new collaboration piece with the great Ernie Najera that he drew and I painted (price TBD). Here is what will be available- (If you miss FCBD and these don't sell out I will have these at Phoenix CC with a few more new ones as well)<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Speaking of Phoeinx Comicon, as I may have stated in previous posts, Long Dog Art will be at table 1743 and we will have original art for sale, a commission list and prints. I have also added a sketch book to that list of items. So if you buy the book from me the 1st sketch in the book drawn by me will be for free! The book itself is $6 so this is a great value! Click on the photo to get the names of the other artists and their tables so you can get some great original work from them as well. Limited quantities so get them while they last.<br />

This is the 1st year Long Dog will have our own table so we are really preparing to have some great original art and a wide variety of print art available as well as onsite commissions and other goodies. </div>

<div>
-After May we shall see, there are a couple of other Cons I am considering but we will just have to see if I have the funds and time off of work for them.</div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div>
So I dont know if any of you are on Instagram or follow me on there but I update that site with doodles, sketches, works in progress and finished art almost daily. Since I don't want to post some of my bigger ideas yet, here are a few pictures I've done over the past month or so. </div>

I couldn't afford one of those nice big flat file systems but this one could at least keep all of my 20 x 14 or smaller stuff in a safe place instead of occupying a cramped portfolio or my floor. So I had to actually dig through all my old portfolios and random piles of drawings today which was a fun experience. I have art from high school all the way through what I'm doing now so it is interesting to see how I grew as an artist, then fall apart as an artist after college and to be where I am now. <br />
<br />
It was interesting looking through my old prints that I did back in college; to look back at my artistic process and my frame of mind back then was kind of an eye opening experience. I had an extremely dark sense of humor (still do, I just don't draw it), a lot of nudes (still draw those) and I was ok with experimenting on my intaglio plates and aquatints until I made the piece work or until I obliterated the plate. I still experiment all the time with my style but not to the extent I used too. If I had more time to play around in a studio maybe I would get that adventurous again... I don't see that happening anytime soon with my other obligations in life but one can always hope.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the prints I dug up, none of these are the super dark or really offensive ones, just a couple of WWII prints and one of my prints from a hobo series I did. Maybe one day post some of the dark social commentary but not today-<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is one of the ones I eventually destroyed the plate. I believe this was the 3rd run on this plate. The smoke the soldiers were running into definitely got too dark but I still liked this version.</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
This was watercolor I did soon after getting to Arizona, so around 2003/04 time frame. Right before I quit pursuing an art career for a few years(bad decision on my end). This was done during the time frame that I was obsessed with schematics and plaid. Lots of fun paintings came out of that period. I'm sure I'll revisit that theme again...<br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Add caption</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this was my drawing of the day. I've found this little app the other day that has all these random poses for the iphone. It's great because it has all the musculature mapped out correctly and I'm always in need of anatomy practice so thats what this one is. I would normally post drawings of the day on Instagram but I think they frown on nudity and I don't feel like getting banned. This was about 45 minutes total, 2h, 2b, 4b pencils- </div>

I assure you, I have been working very hard on some new paintings and I also potentially have earned my 1st professional gig for the big boys in comics. (my Instagram account, longdogart usually has daily updates of my scribble, some even get finished!) So here is the rundown of whats going on, new pictures and a lengthy rambling about my love of the band Between the Buried and Me and their influence on my life in general. <br />
So for those of you wondering what I have been working on I'll show you some sneak peeks of finished paintings that most likely become prints for Phoenix Comicon or Vista Production Group. Just about everything I've done lately has been on my own creation Space Girl Molly (whom I wish to have an actual story out for soon, even if it is a tiny ash tray) and a few licensed characters. Here are some of these finished images-<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Atom Eve, inks. will be digitally painted</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Recently I completed a try out as a colorist for one of the best coloring companies in all of comics. I passed the 1st stage of the try out and if all goes well with the next few pages I'm assigned I will be painting for the biggest companies and the biggest books in the industry. I will post more about who this is with and what books once i know more about where I stand but needless to say, I'm very excited about this opportunity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So anyone that has had the misfortune of discussing music with me for the past 8 years or so knows my Between the Buried and Me obsession. If you don't know who they are go here <a href="http://www.betweentheburiedandme.com/">http://www.betweentheburiedandme.com/</a> and just listen. Or go to Youtube. Or better yet just go buy Colors and Parallax 2 to support the band and free your mind. Seriously, go turn off everything, put on some headphones and just experience masters of their craft work. They fall into many genres but I tend to think of them as the King Crimson of prog metal. Or King Crimson with blast beats. They aren't for everyone but if you like heavy music and you don't listen to BTBAM then I'm sorry, you know nothing John Snow... Anyways- I listen to them daily and enjoy all of their albums but their newest masterpiece, Parallax II Future Sequence has even influenced some of my art. I doodle aimlessly at work quite a bit to keep in practice and all of sudden I was adding owls into my compositions. The Night Owls to be exact, which are the all seeing all knowing menace in several of BTBAM's songs. I fleshed one of my sketches out a bit one day and came up with this piece -</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uX6gJ079R_0/USRZ27LAuQI/AAAAAAAAAo4/8ptTqTfKcKs/s1600/Night+Owls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uX6gJ079R_0/USRZ27LAuQI/AAAAAAAAAo4/8ptTqTfKcKs/s320/Night+Owls.jpg" width="207" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is my version of the Night Owls, which I guess I should mention, are not my own creation and are probably copyright of BTBAM.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course I had Molly visit a moon the Owls were visiting in the final drawing. This will also be painted in Photoshop soon and I'll post the final when I have it ready.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok, enough rambling for now, until next time-</div>

It was great to see my friends and to get inspired by the great work everyone of them is creating at the moment. After this weekend I will be completely focusing on my work for 2013 so hopefully I will have even more posts and pictures for all to enjoy. Here is my most recent "finished work." It's Molly with a whole bunch of flowers in her hair for on a Vista Production Group sketch cover. I also have a whole bunch of random sketches posted on my Instagram @longdogart so let me know if you would like to purchase them. This one is available for $40 so just message me if you would like to own it yourself! More to come in a week, another big painting of space girl Molly and maybe some other "big" news. <br />

Happy Belated New Year! As usual I'm behind in my updates and posting art. I blame the holidays and the day job for my tardiness. And new video games... <br />
As for Long Dog Art news, we will have a table at Phoenix Comicon 2013 and I'll will have some Con exclusive prints available soon for the show. Erin and I also have been working on a children's book that we hope to have out sometime this year and trying to get a story for Space Girl Molly hashed out. I'll keep you posted on how thats going. I also have a few other "secret" projects that I'll be working on with some fellow artists so more to come on that when things are getting ready to come out. Also, I'm sure I will have other Vista Production Group projects coming up this year as well. Even with all this I do still have time for commissions so if you want anything please send me an email to <a href="mailto:longdogart@gmail.com">longdogart@gmail.com</a> and let me know what I can do for you. <br />
<br />
Here are a few of the drawings and paintings I've worked on in the past few weeks. Some were big projects, others just quick practice paintings.<br />

Hello Everyone,<br />
<br />
So what I have for you today is the step by step process I used for my most recent commissioned painting. A friend of mine wanted a big action shot of Boba Fett looking awesome, so I did my best to achieve that... This painting is big, one of the biggest watercolor paintings I've ever done to be honest. I usually keep my paintings small and in odd sizes, just to make it fun for me come framing time... Anyways, its a 20 x 24 inches watercolor on Arches Rives BFK 140lb printmaking paper. I remembered (at least I think I remembered) that paper always held up well to heavy water saturation from my printmaking days and I felt like experimenting. I will let you all decide if you like it or not but I feel it actually turned out pretty nice. So here we go-<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SxzDQ3khLlk/UMJxj0jMkGI/AAAAAAAAAk4/IJ0wXh1RyXg/s1600/bf1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SxzDQ3khLlk/UMJxj0jMkGI/AAAAAAAAAk4/IJ0wXh1RyXg/s320/bf1.jpg" width="252" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Initial quick sketch of the pose. I found an awesome reference photo on a stock site of a woman jumping back shooting guns. So I just adjusted the anatomy to a mans and made it Boba. Easy peasy. I wanted a shot of Boba hovering in the sky shooting out at the viewer.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P47UALW-wM8/UMJxrZy3IjI/AAAAAAAAAlA/MEuLvQkD6zs/s1600/photo1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P47UALW-wM8/UMJxrZy3IjI/AAAAAAAAAlA/MEuLvQkD6zs/s320/photo1.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I taped up the paper to my masonite drawing board and finished the drawing on the easel so I could actually see what I was doing.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_KlMRonl90/UMJxwiZCCdI/AAAAAAAAAlI/tzKhpt3j7dk/s1600/photo2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_KlMRonl90/UMJxwiZCCdI/AAAAAAAAAlI/tzKhpt3j7dk/s320/photo2.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Close up. This was drawn in 2h and hb lead pencils.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ljqMhT3YRqU/UMJx1AxKuCI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/VDoOZ-IjoSQ/s1600/photo3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ljqMhT3YRqU/UMJx1AxKuCI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/VDoOZ-IjoSQ/s320/photo3.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I decided to make this a gun fight happening on Tatooine, with lasers all over and the Millenium Falcon and a Star Destroyer far above in the sky. So this image is the 1st application of paint. I soaked the paper and just steadily kept dabbing in the yellow/ brown colors the give an effect of a hot, dusty desert scene. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seUBjpIVuGY/UMJx6fgbW1I/AAAAAAAAAlY/mEdKKlToTN4/s1600/photo4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seUBjpIVuGY/UMJx6fgbW1I/AAAAAAAAAlY/mEdKKlToTN4/s320/photo4.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So I skipped ahead a bit but I started to add in the colors for his armor and gauntlets. Obviously in some areas I even added in some of my shadows and details. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kcuNOGRwjFU/UMJx_F3IHpI/AAAAAAAAAlg/qrGZDPQ_Ntg/s1600/photo5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kcuNOGRwjFU/UMJx_F3IHpI/AAAAAAAAAlg/qrGZDPQ_Ntg/s320/photo5.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">More detail! Lasers and muzzle flashes added. The MF and Star Destroyer painted in using some atmospheric perspective to try and show that high above in the distance.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KsNZtyFE1iA/UMJyFXoCvFI/AAAAAAAAAlo/aVNxXKcZjJQ/s1600/photo6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KsNZtyFE1iA/UMJyFXoCvFI/AAAAAAAAAlo/aVNxXKcZjJQ/s320/photo6.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The feet and the fire and smoke from Boba's rockets are added in. More detail! And it's finished...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This past Saturday we had the unveiling of the super secret comic project that I'm a part of, The Vista Production Group. It is a group of terrific artists based here in Arizona and it will be a one stop access to all things creative and collectible. The group was created by Brian Augustyn, formerly of DC comics the Flash and Jesse Criscione of the comics super store Jesse James Comics. Our first event had the release of our 1st book, which has all the creators information and great images of our various styles of art. Here is a group shot of all of us as drawn by Mr. John Derrick West (Dadicus!).</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had a big write up on all of us but my Safari decided to crash and I lost all my blogging motivation to re type it all... So here we all are! Keep a look out as we release more info about the group and our new creations.</span><br />

<br />
Here are last weeks newest drawings for all to enjoy. I'll have more new stuff soon as well as a another start to finish process painting.<br />
<br />
In other news, my family and I recently had a photo session with Stacey Woodward of <a href="http://www.dreamphotographystudio.blogspot.com/">Dream Photography Studio</a>. During the course of the session I thought I recognized here from some where and when we were leaving it dawned on me, I knew her from Phoenix Comicon! She works with the wonderful site <a href="http://www.lightningoctopus.com/">Lightning Octopus</a> and did an Amazing job on our photos so I highly recommend checking out her sites and the write up she did for our Etsy studio.<br />

My daughter Amelia has always loved coloring with crayons and occasionally color pencils but she never really wanted to help me with my own work. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">I've noticed recently that she has taken a great interest in watching me paint. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;"><span class="fbPhotoCaptionText">At first she just watched and would make comments on the color I was using. She then started to become a little more hands on so we gave her one of my old watercolor palettes and some brushes and let her go to town. I got to admit, I love her paintings. So I decided to rummage through some drawings that I never finished or just had laying around on scratch paper and I decided to create some art with her. We took some of these warm up sketches and painted over them. She was allowed free reign to color them as she saw fit. I occasionally would take the paper away and allow some of the excess water bleed around the paper... which made her very angry... I guess she didn't like my creative imput. I then inked them with brush and crow quill and then used her favorite medium, crayon, to add some other touches. I enjoyed the collaboration, it took boring sketches and made them interesting. More than anything, I found the process interesting. I've trained myself to use a certain creative process when painting and when you allow a 2 year old to do whatever she wants to do with the composition it just completely throws that process out the window. Here is our results so far...</span></span></span><br />

Hello all, been busy for the past few weeks so sorry for the lack of posts. I've managed to work on a few projects here and there as well as coming up with a brand new one. Jesse James Comics was also nice enough to invite me to contribute some art for a fundraiser to benefit the victims of the Aurora CO shooting (https://www.facebook.com/events/207889002673724/). So here is some of my basic test drawings for my new children's book that I will create soon- Amelia Blairhart, a Katniss painting for some contest that I was too late on entering, some random practice/ reference drawings and The Batman for Aurora. </div>

I spent most of my time the past few weeks drawing test pages to turn in for portfolio reviews at San Diego Comicon and finishing up a few other drawings and paintings. I also managed to log about 35 hours of Star Ocean on the PS2 as well some how.... But anyways, here are 2 of the paintings I spent some time on recently. I don't know if they are actually "done" yet but for now I'm not going to do anything else to them without some deep thought. (besides fixing the eye on the one to the right here... holy uneven Batman) </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So on to the big show, my 1st experience at SDCC as a "professional." I unfortunately did not have an artist alley table or a small press table but since I've been lucky enough to have a couple of little books published by Spazdog I had the opportunity to go to the show for free. SDCC is overwhelming to say the least. I didn't have enough time off of work to go all 4 days but I wish I could have because the one full day I did go was not nearly enough to see everything I wanted to see or spend the time I wanted to spend talking to artists, friends and of course editors for jobs. I spent most of my time in artist alley talking to some of the greats standing there or just eavesdropping on there conversations with other fans about their work. It was nice to get spend some time with David Petersen there as well. I've known him forever and his work is amazing so I was happy to see his booth in artist alley. I bought a super awesome Mouse Guard shirt and caught up for a bit with him... He chided me for doing the portfolio review which was funny but I told him I wanted to see what the editors thought of my stuff. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> I will say the portfolio review was an interesting experience but I don't know if I will spend the time doing that again in the future. I got some nice critiques where they focused on telling me what I need to work on and where my strengths lie so I look forward to trying to implement what they were saying. But overall I think Dave was right, i was the about the 30th person for each of the guys I saw and I think they were a little burnt out and wanting to be somewhere else by the time they got to me. So next time around I will just focus on having fun and try and get into some panels! Which have insane lines by the way. There is no way I would wait 10 hours to see a Superman or Iron Man 3 panel... </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> So thats about it for now. I will now (finally) start on the next issue of Buddha Monkey and then hopefully work on finishing up Sonic Youth with Shawn one of these days. (and maybe I'll even create a new character in the mean time...)</span>long dog arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07984295972561961154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3092515082994089010.post-75532452859409146742012-06-25T21:49:00.001-07:002012-06-25T21:49:28.165-07:00Whats New<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So I don't have too many new pieces to show this week. I pretty much decided since I just did 11 paintings in 3 days that I would take it a little easy this past week. I did get a new watercolor done though and I'll post a little teaser of it since I have yet to scan it. I probably won't post too many new things in the next few weeks either because I'm going to be working on some pieces for my portfolio to show at SDCC... I think it's time to finally get some feedback from the big boys....</span><div>

It was a fun mini set to do, I have never really worked on any of these characters besides Batman, The Joker and Superman so it was interesting to try and capture their likenesses. Thank you to my comic collection and Google for helping in those areas. All of these paintings are watercolor paint and india ink on sketch cards (thin bristol board). This was not wet into wet painting though, I tried to keep my brush as dry as possible to cut down on warp and paper failure since it's not really built for watercolor. Overall the paper held up well and the customer likes them so thats all that is important in my book!<br />
